Mother to Mother Ministry of Oklahoma County, Inc. was conceived in 1988 when members of Church Women United were studying issues regarding the feminization of poverty. Volunteers were recruited to serve as board members. They met monthly, developed by-laws, goals and a budget. In October of 1989, when half of the annual budget was raised, the ministry officially began and a part-time coordinator was hired.
20 years later, Mother to Mother continues to fill a specific need. Low income mothers of various ages and backgrounds set and reach attainable goals with the help of their volunteer support mother(s). Support is given in the form of nurture, advice, encouragement and friendship, not material resources. While the program focuses on volunteers and their gifts of time and self, there are certain expenses. The program has an office at First Baptist Church in downtown Oklahoma City that is run by a part-time executive director. The director screens the partner mothers and evaluates their progress. She is responsible for promoting Mother to Mother to the public, planning monthly meetings, and recruiting and training volunteers. The director is assisted by the Board of Directors with these responsibilities. |
